Heavy Rain Disrupts Mangaluru’s Air Travel: A Weather-Related Challenge
Mangaluru, a coastal city in Karnataka, India, faced a significant challenge on November 22nd when heavy rain and intense lightning strikes caused disruptions in flight operations at the Bajpe airport. The downpour, accompanied by thunder, affected not only Mangaluru but also nearby regions in Dakshina Kannada.
During the evening, between 10 pm and 11 pm, the city experienced a sudden and intense storm. Flights from Mumbai and Bengaluru were redirected back to their respective cities, while a Dubai-bound flight had to be diverted to Kannur, where it landed safely. This weather event highlights the impact of heavy rain on air travel, especially in regions prone to sudden and intense storms.
The storm’s reach extended beyond Mangaluru, affecting several areas in Dakshina Kannada. Vittal, Puttur, Bantwal, Beltangady, Sullia, Kadaba, and Mulki reported heavy rain with thunder and lightning. In Puttur taluk, Savanuru and Peruvaje received steady rain, while Bettampady, Panaje, and Kalmadka experienced intense lightning alongside the rain. The Uppinangady region endured a half-hour of rain, causing some arecanut to be soaked in courtyards.
The Udupi district also experienced rain after 11 pm, with Padubidri, Uchchila, Kapu, and Udupi town receiving moderate showers. Kasargod reported moderate rainfall as well. This widespread weather event underscores the importance of weather monitoring and preparedness, especially in regions prone to sudden and intense storms, to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel operations.
