Facing a growing wave of insecurity, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State is calling for urgent action from the National Assembly. The party is pushing for the swift passage of a state police bill, highlighting the escalating security challenges that demand immediate attention. But why now, and what’s the core of their argument? Let’s dive in.
Director of Media and Publicity for the APC in Ondo State, Steve Otaloro, voiced the party’s concerns, citing persistent issues like rural banditry, violent attacks by herdsmen, kidnapping, and urban crime. He also pointed out the increasing infiltration of extremist groups across national borders. Otaloro emphasizes that Nigeria is facing a new and dangerous phase of insecurity, demanding innovative solutions.
While acknowledging the current administration’s efforts, including enhanced security deployments, modern hardware acquisition, and improved intelligence operations, Otaloro stresses that the Nigeria Police Force, despite its dedication, cannot single-handedly secure every community. He believes a multi-layered policing framework is essential to address today’s realities.
And this is the part most people miss… The APC is advocating for a shift towards state-level policing systems, a concept long championed by the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, former Governor of Ondo State. Akeredolu foresaw the dangers of unchecked crime and advocated for decentralized policing. His vision led to the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, a regional security network designed to support federal agencies. Despite facing resistance, Akeredolu stood firm, ensuring Amotekun became a model for effective community policing.
The APC also commends Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his role in strengthening and modernizing Amotekun. His efforts include enhanced training, improved equipment, expanded intelligence gathering, and better welfare for operatives. These interventions have garnered national praise for Amotekun’s discipline and measurable results.
But here’s where it gets controversial… The APC is proposing that the state police bill be named the “Akeredolu State Police Bill” to honor his legacy. They believe this bill would empower states to manage their own police structures, reduce the burden on the Nigeria Police Force, strengthen local intelligence, and combat various crimes. Otaloro urges the National Assembly to unite behind this legislation, emphasizing that Nigeria’s security future depends on bold reforms.
Passing this bill, according to the APC, would strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and secure the nation for generations. The success of Amotekun, pioneered by Akeredolu and sustained by Aiyedatiwa, serves as a testament to the effectiveness of state-backed community policing.
